James William Funk age 63 of Damascus, Maryland passed away suddenly on July 7, 2023.
Jim was born in Coatesville, PA on April 24, 1960, to Walter Emery Funk and Jean Posey Funk. Even at birth Jim displayed a fighting spirit being one of the smallest babies to survive at the Coatesville Hospital weighing only 3 lbs. 12 ounces. Jim was a superb athlete and after graduating from Coatesville High School in 1978 accepted a scholarship to play football for coach Joe Paterno and the Penn State Nittany Lions. In doing so Jim followed in the footsteps of his father and mother who were both athletes at Penn State. After becoming a four-year letter winner Jim graduated from Penn State with a B. S. in Business. Jim worked in the business sector for most of his life spending the last nineteen years as the Business Manager for the Montgomery County Public School System.
Jim is survived by his beloved soulmate and wife Alisa Woicicki Funk with whom he spent 33 wonderful years. In addition to his wife Jim, is survived by three sons Joshua William Funk and wife Jessica, Jacob Walter Funk and Fiancée Hannah Ann Sluss and Jordan Walter Funk and girlfriend Samantha Brunelle. Jim is also survived by two sisters Rebecca Kirschman of Brick, NJ, Judith (Louis) Laurento of the The Villages, FL, and brother Terry (Nancy) Funk of Titusville, PA. He also had numerous nieces and nephews who adored him.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and an Uncle Walter W. Posey II with whom he shared a love of the outdoors. A brother-in-law Dennis Kirschman also predeceased him in death.
For those that knew Jim well he will be remembered for the fervor and passion he had for his sons’ athletic accomplishments. Whether it was Damascus, James Madison or a Maryland Football game or an Ohio State Lacrosse game Jim’s booming voice could be heard proudly cheering on his sons. Watching Jake as a member of the LA Rams as they made their Super Bowl Run was one of his proudest moments.
Jim also greatly appreciated the strong friendships he had within the Damascus Community and looked forward to Friday Nights Lights and cheering the Hornets on with the other parents. He also forged many great friendships among the faculty, staff, and students at Montgomery Blair High School.
