Capt. Anthony W. Giles USN (ret)

Captain Anthony W. Giles of Gaithersburg, Maryland entered eternal life on January 6, 2023. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas on March 9,1953, and was the son of the late Lieutenant - Colonel and Tuskegee Airman Ivie V. Giles USAF (Ret) and Barbara (Locke) Giles. “Tony” as he was affectionately known, earned a Bachelors of Science degree from Southern University and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Shortly after graduation, he accepted a commission in the United States Navy.

 At sea, Tony displayed exceptional leadership while serving on Frigates and Amphibious ships. Tony was respected by all who served with him, and ensured the only sacrifices made were necessary for a successful mission. Ashore, Tony held a variety of leadership roles related to Training, Development and Administration of the United Staes Naval Reserves. His many achievements were recognized by the United States Navy as he was a recipient of The Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal, in addition to numerous other personal, unit, campaign and service decorations.

Once retired, Tony continued to demonstrate his leadership, work ethic, infinite curiosity, and experience while working at the Air Force Memorial. He took great pride in educating, celebrating and sharing stories with the Honor Flight tours and memorial guests. He was referred to as the “Navy Captain” and often reminded everyone of his ties to the United States Air Force, as his father was a Tuskegee Airman. 

Tony’s legacy is not only one of professional accomplishments and service but also as a dedicated family man. Tony was proceeded in death by his wife, Dr. Constance (Smith) Giles and brother Gerald Giles. He is survived by his children Tiffany (Floyd) and Ian Scott Ivie, his brother Keith (Laura) , granddaughter Zora, nephews Chaz, Lance, DeJuan, and numerous extended family, dear friends and colleagues.
