V.P. Mathai, born to Paulose and Aleyamma of the Vettukattel family, Poothrikka, Ernakulam, Kerala, India, peacefully departed to his heavenly abode on January 23, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and joy. In 1969, he moved from Kerala to Kalyan, Mumbai, and later worked in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In 2022, he and his wife moved to Maryland to be with their son, Saji. Saji's family was blessed to have “Appacha” with them, cherishing the precious time spent together over the past three years.
Appacha led a simple life, known for his gentle nature, big heart, and boundless love for everyone, including strangers he met. He was a talented cook who loved to feed anyone who visited him. Among his specialties were “Malayalee Christian” dishes, particularly his beloved “Pidi” (Kerala Syrian Christian dumplings) and “varutharacha” chicken curry.
He is survived by his wife, Susamma; children, Saji and Siji; daughter-in-law, Sheba; son-in-law, Deepu; and grandchildren, Matthew, Steven, Daniel, Eva, and Emmanuel.
He will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Barnabas Malankara Orthodox Church and live-streamed at: https://tinyurl.com/cbrsbmrk
