Mildred Allen

March 19, 1920 — July 25, 2015

Mildred Allen, known to all her friends and family as “Sis” was born in Washington, DC on March 19, 1920. She moved with her parents, Paul and Marie (Erb) Hageman, and her two brothers, Paul and John (Jack) to G Street SE in 1931 and stayed there until her death. Sis attended local schools including Eastern High School and after graduation attended a year of secretarial training. She continued to live with her parents, taking care of them until the time of their deaths.

Sis worked as a secretary at the nearby Navy Yard and then as a long time executive assistant to Howard M. Weiss, Chief of Quality Assurance Division at NASA. Sis was such a key member of the team that Mr. Weiss gave her official recognition by taking her to see a launch of one of the manned NASA missions at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Sis married Robert (Bob) Allen in 1965. Bob came to live with her and her parents at that time. Since she and Bob did not have biological children together, Bob’s adult children became as daughters to Sis. Sis loved all the children she took care of over the years, both in her family, the neighborhood and the church.
Sis was a dedicated member of Christ Church + Washington Parish on Capitol Hill since 1931 where she sang in the children’s choir, helped take care of the children, was one of the Breakfast Crew (where she entertained attendees with stories of Christ Church in the old days) and ran the Jewelry Stand at the Christmas Bazaar. In that latter capacity, she always recruited young children of the church to help as “elves” and many of them have fond memories of working with her there. The walls of Sis’ living room and hall are covered with photos of the children she has known, loved and cared for from Christ Church + Washington Parish and her extended family.

Sis died peacefully at home on July 25, 2015. She was preceded in death by parents Paul and Marie, her husband Robert, her two brothers Paul and Jack, her nephew Jimmy and nieces Kathy and Nancy. She is survived by stepdaughters, Bobby, Pat, Linda and Ethel, nieces and nephews, John, Paul and Dick Hageman, Mark Hageman, great nieces and nephews including Marcie Boyer, Coakley Brown, Andy Schneider, Jessica Ober and great great nieces and nephews including Kathy, James and Jareth, Michelle, Steve and Joe. She also had six great great great nieces and nephews including Rich, Nolyn, Nate, Lily, Preston and Angelina. She will be missed greatly by her family and all the members of Christ Church + Washington Parish, especially those who have known her since when they were children.
