Sweety Ina Johnson, a beloved matriarch who touched the lives of many with her kindness and generous spirit, passed away on January 22, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on August 14, 1943, in Butts County, Georgia, Sweety was a beautiful soul known for her unwavering work ethic and deep passion for caring for others.
Throughout her life, Sweety embraced various roles that reflected her dedication to her family and community. She began her career as an elevator operator and later served as a receptionist at DC Teachers Federal Credit Union, where she greeted each person with a warm smile. The evenings saw her working tirelessly as a custodian, all while her greatest joy stemmed from her love of children. In 1990, she opened Sweety’s Daycare, nurturing countless children and leaving an indelible mark on their families.
Her family fondly remembers Sweety's sweet potato pies, a cherished tradition that brought everyone together. The image of her in the kitchen, crafting these pies filled with love and care, is a memory that will be cherished forever. She had a unique ability to make every holiday special and never forgot a birthday, always finding time to call and remind each loved one how important they were to her.
An alumna of DC Public Schools, Sweety's vibrant personality and authenticity were extraordinary. She was known for her honesty and never hesitated to speak her mind, making herself unforgettable to anyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Her loyalty, sense of humor, empathy, and quick wit made her the life of every gathering. Sweety possessed an enormous heart, and her strength, wisdom, and tireless work ethic served as inspiration to all who knew her.
Sweety absolutely loved the casino and playing numbers was her thing! She could spend hours enjoying the thrill of it all. She delighted in watching tv shows, shopping, and indulging in sweet treats alongside a cold Coca-Cola. Her love for concerts and self-care, such as maintaining her hair and nails, showcased her zest for life. Among her favorite pastimes was collecting elephants, a reflection of her playful spirit, and she never turned down a hot cup of coffee or an opportunity to create a little mischief from time to time.
Sweety's proudest accomplishments were her family and the legacy she built. In 1988, seeking better opportunities, she moved her family from Washington, DC, to Gaithersburg, MD. She devoted herself to providing a welcoming home where everyone felt safe and loved. Her children and grandchildren were her world; she worked diligently to ensure they had a strong foundation to grow upon.
She leaves behind her loving brother, Robert Tiller Sr., and her children: Angelina Tiller, Robert Johnson II (Vonda), Roberta Holland (Michael), and Walter Williams Jr. (Malinda). Sweety's legacy continues through her grandchildren: Leevon Floyd Jr. (Kenisha), Crystal Tiller, Jamila Floyd, Shaquanne Johnson, Shadeed Tiller, Iquisha Coleman (Turek), Robert Johnson III (Abrial), Taahirah Johnson, Shahirah Johnson, Karima Holland, Dominique Williams, Tanisha Williams, and Kayla Johnson. Her absence leaves a void that no one can fill, but her spirit, love, and legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her. She will be deeply missed, remembered lovingly, and celebrated for the bright light she brought into this world.
A Celebration of Life will be at a later date.
